Air Abrasion Dentistry
Air abrasion is a drill-less technique that works like a mini sandblaster to remove decay.
The process means that there is no abrasive drilling, noise, heat or odour and the treatment can be relatively quick and minimally invasive.
The added advantage of of the air abrasion technique allows for a greater degree of healthy tooth tissue remaining, as well as an improvement in drying of the treatment area, allowing for the swift and effective application of composite materials for bonding and filling procedures.
Small particles of decay on the tooth surface are effectively blasted away through the air abrasion technique and subsequently leave the area open to early detection of problems within the tooth.
Air abrasion is a comfortable and completely safe procedure that simply requires the wearing of protective eye wear and the use of a rubber sheet that fits around teeth. The treatment also involves a suctioning device which prevents particles from being inhaled.
Air abrasion reduces the need for anaesthesia, and there is a lesser incidence of micro-fracturing or drill damage to the tooth. As such the technique can be of great benefit to both the patient and dentist, allowing for greater ease and reduced time in the dental chair.
